Careers in the Construction Industry

There is an abundance of opportunities to work on a residential construction site and most can be learned on the job. Typical skills can include any of the following:​

  • Learning to safely use construction tools such as hammers, screwdrivers, electric drills, all types of saws, and measuring tools like levels and measuring tapes.

  • Installing home framing and drywall

  • Installing windows, doors and the trim that surrounds them

  • Learning about framing and finishing tools like nail guns, skill saws, table saws, or chop saws

  • Learning how to install roofing and soffits

  • Reading and interpreting blueprints

  • Learning how to paint and stain all types of materials

  • Learning about home insulation and how to install it safely

  • Job site clean-up and the proper disposal of construction materials

  • Learning about the role of other contractors such as heating and air conditioning installers, electricians, plumbers, insulation installers, kitchen and bath specialists, plus many other professionals.
